Nigeria’s Aso Rock is one of the most famous landmarks in Nigeria, but does it have spiritual powers?
BattaBox presenter heads to Abuja, Nigeria to ask Nigerians about the famous Aso Rock. Over 400-meters high, the enormous rocky outcrop sits almost at the centre of Nigeria, as a symbol of unity for all our diversity and ethnic groups. And beneath Aso Rock are the Presidential Villa, the National Assembly, and the Nigerian Supreme Court. It is literally the seat of power for Africa’s most powerful country.
But does Aso Rock have spiritual powers?
“There is a spirit behind it now, it’s not an ordinary Aso Rock,” laughs one Nigerian lady. “The spirit behind Aso Rock is the spirit of stealing, corruption, and you name it!”
“The first thing that comes to mind when I think of Aso Rock is – that is where they pack the money, because that is where the Nigerian president stays,” says one Nigerian trader in Abuja.
Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria, strategically located in the centre of the country when the city was planned and built in the 1980s. Since the capital of Nigeria was moved from Lagos to Abuja in 1991, all of Nigeria’s presidents – including Abacha, Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, and Buhari – have sat in the Presidential Villa to run the country.
“Aso Rock is only for rich people, because I can never get there – what am I going there to do?” smiles an Abuja businessman.
“There is a special power that is coming from Aso Rock, there is something special that is coming from it, it is not an ordinary rock, but a ritual rock,” says one Nigerian man. “The power that is coming from this country is coming from that Aso Rock.”
